Edmonton on fire, clinches playoffs Rush celebrates berth with improbable OT win; Rock snaps skid A year ago, it would be impossible to imagine the Edmonton Rush contending for a division title -- and yet the Rush is playoff-bound and tied for first place in the Western Division. Edmonton punched its postseason ticket Friday night by edging the Washington Stealth in overtime, 14-13, and celebrated with a circus-quality win one night later in Minnesota: down 12-7, the Rush scored the final five goals of regulation and scored an empty-net goal in overtime for a 13-12 win. No such excitement in the East, where nobody can clinch anything this weekend. Everyone's making their late-season push, though. Toronto, for example, did something Friday night it hadn't done in almost two months -- win a game! -- rallying past Calgary, 9-8, then routed Philadelphia on Saturday, 13-6.
Tavares, Gajic selected as March's best Ageless forward, rookie sensation chosen for month-end awards The National Lacrosse League has named Buffalo Bandits forward John Tavares, playing in his nineteenth season, as the league's Player of the Month for March. In four games, Tavares scored eight goals and dished out ten assists, leading the Bandits to a 4-0 record in the month and back into the Eastern Division playoff hunt. It is Tavares' record-extending tenth Player of the Month award. The league also named Colorado Mammoth forward Alex Gajic as the Rookie of the Month. Gajic shined in an otherwise dismal month for the Tusks (0-3), scoring eleven goals and dishing out four assists in three games.
Washington first to clinch playoff bid The Washington Stealth became the first team to clinch a playoff berth this season by defeating the Colorado Mammoth twice this weekend. Friday night in Denver, the Stealth rallied to spoil Bob Hamley's debut as Mammoth head coach, scoring eight times in the third quarter and holding on for a 15-14 victory. Back at home the following night, Washington rode Lewis Ratcliff's six goals to a 12-9 win. In the suddenly very tight Eastern Division, Orlando opened up a game-and-a-half lead by defeating Toronto, 10-8. The Rock, loser of five straight, fell into a three-way tie for second place with Boston (a 13-7 loser at Philadelphia) and red-hot Buffalo (a 14-7 win at Rochester).
Bob Hamley named Tusks' new head coach The Colorado Mammoth on Monday named Bob Hamley as its new head coach, as team president and general manager Steve Govett tries "every possible combination to get the team back on track." Hamley replaces Govett, who went 2-5 as interim coach since firing Bob McMahon in January. The Mammoth responded to Govett early on, winning his first two games as coach but losing the past five. This is Hamley's third stop as an NLL head coach, following stints with Columbus/Arizona and Edmonton. Hamley's greatest success came in Glendale, where he guided the Sting to two NLL Champion's Cup Final berths in three seasons. The Mammoth also announced that McMahon will return to the team as Hamley's assistant; the two have coached together several times in the past.
Riggers rout Titans in Final rematch Saturday's rematch of the 2009 NLL Champion's Cup Final was expected to be nearly as good as the original, with defending champion Calgary trying to keep pace with Western Division-leading Washington and Orlando holding on to first place in the suddenly very tight East. Expectations were erased quickly, as the Roughnecks dominated the first half to the tune of a 7-2 lead, then cruised to victory, 13-6, at Amway Arena. Josh Sanderson led the way offensively, scoring four goals and assisting on four more. In the only other action during Week Eleven, the Boston Blazers closely followed Calgary's example, establishing the same 7-2 halftime advantage en route to a 12-5 blowout victory over the host Edmonton Rush. Dan Dawson had five goals for the Blazers.
Tavares scores in OT twice in Week 10 Winning two overtime games in one weekend? It's happened before, as recently as January (Colorado). Scoring the game-winning goal in both victories? The legendary John Tavares just added another line to his overflowing lacrosse résumé -- the only player to do it, ever. Tavares scored 25 seconds into sudden death for an 11-10 win Friday night against the Toronto Rock, then struck 36 seconds into overtime Saturday night against the Boston Blazers (a 9-8 Bandits victory). Elsewhere in a busy Week Ten, Philadelphia bounced back from an 11-9 loss at Orlando to crush Minnesota, 20-11; Orlando held Rochester scoreless for 36 minutes in a 9-4 win; Edmonton defeated Colorado, 13-9; and Washington rallied past Calgary, 13-12.
