Familiar sights abound in NLL semifinalsRematch of '99 semifinal & meeting of Thruway rivalsNLL Press Release The National Lacrosse League prepares for its third post-season this weekend with a common look. The Rochester Knighthawks will again be on the road. They can only hope that the end result doesn’t mirror last season’s playoffs. Last season the Knighthawks won on the road in Baltimore in the semi-finals, then lost 13-10 in Toronto in the Championship Game. Tomorrow night they’ll travel to Buffalo to take on League MVP John Tavares and the Buffalo Bandits at HSBC Arena. There’s another familiar sight on the post-season landscape as Philadelphia travels to Maple Leaf Gardens in this weekend’s other matchup. The two teams tangled there last season in the game whose winner would advance to the title game. The Wings were embarrassed 13-2 in a game which set a new record for fewest goals by one team in one game. Buffalo hosting tomorrow night isn’t as rare as if the game were in Rochester (the Knighthawks have only hosted one playoff game in team history, 1995, their first season), but it is the first time since 1997 that a post-season game is being played in the Nickel City. That game was the final championship game of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League, and the K’Hawks were the opponents and won. The year before, the Bandits had beaten the Hawks in Buffalo to advance to the title game where they beat Philly for their third World Championship. Those are the only two post-season meetings between the Bandits and Knighthawks over the years. The Bandits are 7-3 lifetime in home playoff games. There likely will be fireworks in the contest. Not of the pre-game entertainment variety, but rather of the offensive nature. Buffalo was the league’s highest scoring team this year and Tavares tied for the league lead in scoring. Right behind him though was Rochester’s John Grant, Jr., named yesterday as the NLL Rookie of the Year. Grant had an amazing 77 points in his pro debut. Toronto brings an intimidating 13-1 record in their two years (regular season and playoffs combined) in Maple Leaf Gardens to Saturday’s game as well as a season-ending four-game winning streak. The Wings are just 2-4 against them (regular season and playoffs combined) over the last three years, but have over 100 games of playoff experience on their roster. This game is not expected to be as high scoring as Friday night’s. After all, the two goaltenders were chosen to the First and Second All-Pro teams announced yesterday. Toronto’s Bob Watson (First Team), led the league in goals-against average (11.04) and tied for the top save percentage mark (.771). Philadelphia’s Dallas Eliuk is pro indoor lacrosse’s all-time saves leader, and he’ll be facing a Toronto offense that produced the third-fewest goals in the NLL this season. The tenth-year pro set new personal one-season highs in goals and points and tied his best mark for assists in one season. Buffalo: In addition to Tavares being the League MVP and a First Team All-Pro, fellow assistant captain Mike Accursi was named to the Second All-Pro team. Tavares had 15 points in the two regular season games this year against Rochester. Chris Prat, who celebrated his 30th birthday yesterday, had nine. Former Knighthawk Chris Driscoll will not face his former team, still sidelined with a pinched nerve. Notable: The Knighthawks won their last five games of the season... Buffalo has won five straight at home... Rochester led the league with 18 short-handed goals and also had the NLL’s best team shooting percentage (30.3)... The Banidts were 7-0 this season when leading at halftime... 15 players who played for the Bandits this season have never played in a NLL/MILL playoff game. Rochester has eight... He led the Wings with eight points in their home loss to Toronto last month. Rookie Jason Clark will battle Toronto rookie Kaleb Toth. Clark finished third in scoring among first year players (35 points); Toth was second. Clark had two game-winning goals. On a featured chat on the NLL website last night, Philly forward Jake Bergey said, "I just think Toronto got a bum deal to draw us in the first round." Toronto: Jim Veltman was third in the voting for NLL MVP. He has led the league in loose balls recovered every year he has played pro indoor lacrosse. Chris Gill set new personal one-season highs in assists (20) and points (50). Colin Doyle led the Rock with seven points in their win at Philadelphia last month. Notable: Philadelphia led the league in fewest short-handed goals against (five)... The game again pits Wings Head Coach Tony Resch against Rock Head Coach Les Bartley. Besides last year, the two coached against each other in the 1995 and 1996 playoffs when Bartley was Buffalo’s bench boss. In addition, Resch played for the Wings against Bartley’s Bandits in the 1992 and 1993 Championship Games. Out of the games from those four seasons, Bartley was victorious three times. (Resch was also an assistant coach of the ‘94 Wings team that beat Buffalo in the title game.)... A Wings victory would send them on the road for the Championship Game (at Buffalo or Rochester). If Toronto wins, they will host the title game on Saturday, 6 May at 3:00 PM... Joe Bowen provides the television play-by-play, flanked on color commentary by Brian Shanahan, who played for the Ontario Raiders in 1998. His brother Brendan plays for the Detroit Red Wings (NHL)... NLL Commissioner John Livsey, Jr. will attend the game. Tickets: At Maple Leaf Gardens or charge-by-phone through Ticketmaster at 416.872.5000. -30- |
