Wings waste shot to move up in EastConn scores three goals in Arizona's 13-12 win in PhillyGeorge Bruck Outsider's Guide Game Correspondent The Philadelphia Wings squandered a chance to move into first place in the Eastern Division Saturday afternoon, losing at home to the Arizona Sting, 13-12. Brad Self and Marc Morley gave the Wings an early advantage, which, combined with a Shawn Nadelen goal sandwiched by tallies from Arizona’s Craig Conn and Peter Veltman, put Philly up 3-2 after one period. Arizona woke up in the second stanza, scoring the next three goals, as Conn, Matt Brown, and Dan Dawson each found rope. Dan Marohl gave Philadelphia its only goal of the period while on the power play, nearly ten minutes into the quarter, only to be followed by Brown’s second goal, giving the Sting a 6-4 lead going to the locker rooms. Lindsay Plunkett scored quickly to open the third period, only to be answered by a four-goal volley from Philadelphia's Glenn Clark, Jeff Ratcliffe, Shawn Greenhalgh, and Rob Van Beek. The resulting lead did not last long for the Wings, as Peter Lough and Pat Maddelena each beat Wing netminder Matt Roik to return the lead to Arizona, 9-8, by the end of the third quarter. Philadelphia's Jake Bergey drew first blood in the final period of play, tying the game at 9-9, but Arizona countered with a three-goal run (Plunkett, Curt Malawsky, and Conn). Morley pulled the Wings to within 11-9 with nine minutes left, but Chris Seller restored Arizona’s three-goal advantage moments later. Ratcliffe and Marohl scored to get within 13-12 with 36 seconds left, and the defense held the Sting scoreless for the final five minutes of play, but the Wings could not overcome their deficit. The Wings fall to 6-6 and will host the Rochester Knighthawks in an important division matchup next Saturday. Arizona improves to 6-5, and goes home to face the Buffalo Bandits Saturday at Glendale Arena. -30- |
