NLL Week Thirteen RoundupMatinee Madness: Sting, Riggers win; K'Hawks flop in quest for paybackR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Thirteen, 24-25 March 2006 (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.) Buffalo Bandits at Minnesota Swarm Despite falling behind a couple times in the early going, Minnesota (6-6) led 4-3 after one quarter, led by two goals by Kasey Beirnes. After the Swarm went up 6-3 early in the second quarter, Buffalo (6-4) ran off five straight goals (three from Dan Teat) to end the half with an 8-6 lead. The Bandits struck twice more to open the third period, then allowed Minnesota to reply with two of its own. Buffalo's slide continued into the fourth quarter, surrendering three more goals to fall behind, 11-10. However, John Tavares tied the game right at mid-quarter, Vyse put the Bandits back in front two minutes later, and Mark Steenhuis added an insurance goal in the final seconds. Tavares had six points (2 goals, 4 assists) to lead all scorers. Chad Culp (3 goals, 2 assists) and Ryan Ward (1 goal, 4 assists) had five points each for the Swarm. Arizona Sting at Philadelphia Wings Arizona (6-5) trailed 3-2 after one quarter, but Peter Veltman's goal with 21 seconds left in the period started a four-goal Sting run, leading to a 6-4 halftime advantage. After Lindsay Plunkett scored to start the third quarter, Philadelphia (6-6) answered with a four-goal run of its own, to go ahead 8-7. Seconds later, though, Peter Lough tied the game and Pat Maddalena restored the Sting lead with 2:17 left. Philadelphia's Jake Bergey scored 25 seconds into the fourth period, tying the game at 9-9, but Arizona countered with the next three and the Wings spent the rest of the game trying to catch up. A Dan Marohl goal with 36 seconds left pulled Philadelphia within one, but the Wings could not score again. With a goal and six assists, Arizona's Dan Dawson led all scorers. Marohl, Sean Greenhalgh and Brad Self had four points each for the Wings. Calgary Roughnecks at Toronto Rock Three of Kelusky's goals came in the first quarter, as Calgary (7-5) built a 4-3 lead. After Toronto (7-6) scored twice to open the second period, Kelusky scored again, then assisted on a Kevin Dostie goal which forced a 6-6 halftime tie. Jesse Phillips and Lewis Ratcliff scored early in the third quarter for Calgary, then Josh Sanderson answered moments later -- and the remaining eleven minutes of the period were scoreless, indicative of a sharp defensive turn in the contest. Ratcliff scored exactly a minute into the fourth period, and Calgary stayed a step ahead the rest of the game. When Colin Doyle pulled the Rock back within one, Kelusky stretched the lead back to two. After Aaron Wilson did the same with 2:29 left, Kyle Goundrey answered with 23 seconds left. The loss spoiled an exceptional four-goal performance by Toronto's Josh Sanderson, whose six points tied for the Rock lead. Ratcliff posted the game high of seven points, on three goals and four assists. Rochester Knighthawks at Buffalo Bandits Buffalo (7-4) jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Kim Squire and Cory Bomberry, then hung on for a 3-2 lead after one period. Rochester (7-6) tied the game at three on a Mike Hasen goal 2:22 into the second quarter, but the Bandits struck for six of the next seven goals, including the first two of Mark Steenhuis' seven, for a 9-4 halftime lead. It only got worse for the Knighthawks in the third period, as the Buffalo lead inched higher and higher, reaching 14-6 late in the period. A couple more Buffalo goals made it a 16-7 laugher 1:21 into the fourth, and the Bandits coasted home, able to allow six Rochester goals without feeling a bit of pressure. Steenhuis led all scorers, tallying eight points on seven goals and one assist. Shawn Williams had four goals and two assists for the Knighthawks. Colorado Mammoth at Edmonton Rush Colorado (7-5) actually trailed as late as three minutes into the second quarter, after Brad Dairon and Chris McElroy scored in short order for a 3-2 Rush lead. Colorado responded with the next six goals, five in the second period and one to open the third, then strung together four more after Edmonton (1-12) snapped a nineteen-minute scoring drought. Two Gavin Prout goals to begin the fourth quarter put the Mammoth ahead 13-5, before Edmonton narrowed the gap a bit on late tallies by Jamey Bowen and Kevin Howard. Ben Prepchuk led the Mammoth in scoring, on two goals and four assists. Bowen (2 goals, 1 assist) and Colin Sherbanuk (1 goal, 2 assists) had three points each for the Rush. San Jose Stealth at Portland LumberJax San Jose (5-5) led 6-0 ten minutes into the game, forcing the early departure of LumberJax goaltender Dallas Eliuk (10 shots, 5 saves). After allowing a couple goals to Luke Wiles late in the first period, relief goalie Matt King settled in, and Portland (6-5) scored all three goals in the second, drawing to within 7-4 at halftime. The LumberJax narrowed the gap to 8-7 by the end of the third quarter, then tied the game on a Mike Hominuck goal in the first minute of the fourth. After Ryder Bateman and Brodie Merrill put the 'Jax ahead by two, Derek Malawsky and Jeff Zywicki restored order by tying the game, 10-10, with five and a half minutes to play. Bruce Alexander (1 goal, 4 assists) and Hominuck (3 goals, 2 assists) tied for the game high in points, five, with Wiles (3 goals, 1 assist) and Gary Rosyski (1 goal, 3 assists) tallying four each for the Stealth. -30- |
