Jax come up Aces in Minnesota, 13-8

With comeback win over Swarm, Portland clinches first place in West

With goaltender Dallas Eliuk nursing a tweaked hamstring, it's good for the Portland LumberJax that they have backup goaltenders who can hold down the fort.

One night after rookie Aaron Bold was forced into action and backstopped Portland to a win over Edmonton, Matt King put up a 22-minute scoreless streak in Saturday's game at Minnesota.

It was a pretty big moment for King to go lights out on the Swarm, too:

1. It came in the final 22 minutes of the game.

2. It allowed the LumberJax to flip an 8-7 deficit into a 13-8 victory.

3. Oh, and with Calgary falling apart against Colorado earlier this evening, it made the LumberJax the first team ever to win a division title in its first year.

Minnesota, though, didn't make it easy, despite having nothing to play for -- its playoff berth was assured last night when Philadelphia lost, and the Swarm was not in contention to host a playoff game next week.

Ryan Ward put the Swarm ahead barely over a minute and a half into the game, and Sean Pollock made it 2-0 three minutes later.

Less than thirty seconds after Peter Morgan got the LumberJax on the scoreboard, Minnesota responded on a goal by sudden sensation Dean Hill -- a practice squadder as recently as a month ago, he now has six goals in two games.

A late exchange of goals by Portland's Mike Hominuck and Minnesota's Spencer Martin made it 4-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Hominuck scored again 32 seconds into the second quarter, then one more time after a response by Hill. Ryan Powell tied the game at 5-5 with about six minutes left in the first half, but Minnesota retook the lead on a Chad Culp goal a minute and a half before intermission.

Portland twice tied the game early in the third quarter, only to be foiled each time by Kasey Beirnes -- only a temporary hurdle, as it turned out.

Ryder Bateman tied the game at 8-8 a half-minute after Beirnes' second goal, followed by Morgan in the final minute of the period.

Morgan's goal, as well as a Hominuck tally to start the fourth quarter, came with Martin serving a major penalty for slashing.

Even after Martin returned, and even with Portland penalized twice in the fourth quarter for interference, Minnesota was hopelessly stuck on eight goals. King stopped all ten shots he faced in the fourth quarter, while Morgan, Ryan Sharp, and Tom Montour put the game out of reach.

Hominuck's four goals led all scorers, and he tied with Morgan (three goals, three assists) and Powell (one goal, five assists) to lead the Jax in points, six.

Culp also tallied six points, on a goal and five assists.

King finished with 35 saves, a decent total which does not indicate how he turned a poor first half (six goals allowed on seventeen shots) into a superb second half (two goals on 26 shots).

Matt Disher took the loss, making 33 saves on 45 shots. Nick Patterson played for half of the fourth quarter, stopping five of six shots faced.
