Roughneck rally falls short in DenverLangtry OT goal advances Mammoth to West Final, 18-17R.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Brian Langtry scored 1:15 into sudden death overtime as the Colorado Mammoth outlasted the Calgary Roughnecks, 18-17, Saturday night at Pepsi Center. It was the third victory for Colorado over the Roughnecks in nine days, following a home-and-home sweep last weekend in the final regular-season action for both teams. But unlike last week, when they fell apart on home turf and cost themselves the chance to host this game, the Roughnecks showed up tonight ready to compete. What they weren't ready for, apparently, was holding a lead. A mere 64 seconds after Tracey Kelusky and Kevin Dostie put Calgary on top by a count of 2-0, the Mammoth had tied the game on goals by Langtry and Jay Jalbert. Calgary retook the lead a short time later, courtesy of Jeff Moleski, but Langtry took it back five minutes later. Lewis Ratcliff then forged a 4-3 lead with 1:55 left in the period, but Gavin Prout answered for Colorado. The pattern continued into the second period, with a pair from Kevin Dostie quickly wiped out by a combination from Prout and Dan Carey. Moleski made it 7-6 twenty seconds later, but the Riggers' inability to hold the line quickly caught up with them, as Colorado strung together five straight goals for an 11-7 advantage. The Teflon laxers from Calgary were not to be outdone, though, pulling within 11-10 by halftime on two goals by Kelusky and one from Jason Wulder. The back-and-forth scoring continued into the third quarter, with Colorado responding to two goals allowed by scoring four of its own, two by Prout. That put the Mammoth on top by three, 15-12, heading to the fourth quarter. And so, naturally, the Roughnecks countered with four goals to begin the final period, vaulting into a 16-15 lead; Wulder and Kaleb Toth to start the rally, Kelusky to tie at 9:29, and Ratcliff with the go-ahead goal with 3:48 to play. Andrew Burkholder tied the game for Colorado a half-minute later, then put the Mammoth back in front with 1:10 to play -- not that it was noticed at first. Not the most obvious of goals, the ball rattled off the pipe and the goal line before kicking out, and play continued despite the goal judge flipping on the red light. When the dust settled a few seconds later, Burkholder's goal stood -- and so did one from Dostie, tying the game for the tenth time and forcing the extra period. Langtry ended the game on Colorado's second shot of overtime, a try which bounced off Calgary netminder Andrew Leyshon and trickled into the net. Leyshon (26 saves on 34 shots) entered the game during Colorado's five-goal run in the second quarter, replacing Curtis Palidwor (20 saves on 30 shots). Colorado also used both of its goalies, with Gord Nash (19 saves on 31 shots) yielding to Chris Levis (18 saves on 23 shots) in the third quarter. Offensively, the top dog was Prout, who celebrated winning the appeal of a one-game suspension (he allegedly left the bench during a fight last week) with an eye-popping twelve points, on five goals and seven assists. Calgary had a couple big men offensively, with Dostie (five goals, four assists) and Ratcliff (two goals, seven assists) each tallying nine points and Kelusky (four goals, four assists) tacking on eight. Colorado will host Arizona next Saturday afternoon in the Western Division final. The winner will play in the NLL Championship Game on Saturday, 13 May. -30- |
