Knighthawks dominate Rock late in 16-8 victory

Rochester shows up for fourth quarter (10 goals), Toronto does not

John Grant scored three straight goals in the fourth quarter, keying a ridiculous run as the Rochester Knighthawks ran off with a 16-8 victory over the Toronto Rock on Saturday.

Perhaps the Rock got into "OLA mode" a little too soon and forgot there was a fourth quarter to play.

It would be kind of understandable, with two dominantly Canadian teams playing a decidedly Canadian game for three periods, a tight, low-scoring match full of mini-runs.

That all changed in the fourth quarter, with the Knighthawks turning a 7-6 deficit into an eight-goal victory with a pair of five-goal runs.

Rochester took the early lead on a first-minute goal by Grant, then extended to 2-0 a couple minutes late when Chris Schiller converted a long feed from goaltender Pat O'Toole.

Toronto struck back after about another six minutes, courtesy of Colin Doyle, and tied the game with three minutes left in the quarter on a Chris Driscoll tally.

Jim Veltman put the Rock ahead 31 seconds into the second quarter, but the Knighthawks countered with the next three goals -- Grant, Scott Evans, and Shawn Williams -- for a 5-3 lead.

Toronto again rallied, tying the game by halftime on a Matt Shearer double, the latter with a bit more than a minute to go.

A long scoreless run gave way to Shearer completing his natural hat trick at 8:29 of the third, and Josh Sanderson nudged the Rock ahead 7-5 with a goal two and a half minutes later.

Evans pulled Rochester back within one to end the third quarter.

Williams got the Knighthawks airborne in the fourth, tying the game 56 seconds in and scoring the go-ahead goal less than a minute later.

Grant then went off for three straight goals and an 11-7 lead.

Sanderson snapped the run at 7:07, but the Rock never again gained much footing as the Knighthawks liberally distributed scoring chances to their unsung heroes.

Steve Toll scored twice, both on O'Toole outlet passes, with Ken Millin, Bill Greer and Pat Dutton also finding rope in the closing minutes.

With five goals and six points, Grant was the game's leading scorer and (unsurpringly) was selected as the Game MVP. Shearer (three goals) and Sanderson (two goals, two assists) led Toronto in scoring.

The victory improves Rochester's record to 12-1 alltime against Toronto at Blue Cross Arena.

The Knighthawks move on to play the winner of tomorrow's Minnesota-Buffalo game, sometime next weekend. The Rock moves on to play in the familiar concrete rinks of Ontario, all summer long.
