NLL Division Semifinals: Bandits only favorite to win

Titans swat Swarm, Riggers club Mammoth, and LumberJax cut down Stealth

Philadelphia Wings at Buffalo Bandits

Mike Accursi scored two fourth-quarter goals as the Bandits rallied to defeat the Wings, 14-12.

Led by two goals from Jamie Rooney, Philadelphia (10-7, 0-1) took a 4-1 lead midway through the first quarter, but Accursi cut into that lead with a goal a minute and a half before the end of the period.

After an Athan Iannucci goal to open the second quarter, Buffalo (11-6, 1-0) rattled off five straight goals, taking a 7-5 lead. Iannucci scored to end the run, but Kevin Dostie restored the Bandits' two-goal lead in the final minute of the half.

Delby Powless stretched that lead to 9-6 just 54 seconds into the second half, but the Wings dominated the rest of the quarter, with Rooney and Iannucci bookending two goals by Jake Bergey.

Five minutes into the fourth quarter, Powless scored to tie the game at 10-10, then Accursi put Buffalo ahead less than a minute later. A Merrick Thomson goal tied the game at 11 a few minutes later, but the Bandits netted three straight to claim victory.

Accursi led all scorers with seven points, on four goals and three assists. Iannucci scored four goals and dished out one assist for Philadelphia.

Next Saturday, Buffalo will host the winner of tomorrow's game between New York and Minnesota. Game time has been set for 7:30 PM Eastern.



New York Titans and Minnesota Swarm

Casey Powell scored two key goals late in the fourth quarter, pushing the Titans past the Swarm, 11-8.

Twice in the first quarter, Minnesota (10-7, 0-1) took a one-goal lead, only to let the Titans tie the game a minute or so later. First, the Swarm's Craig Point traded a goal with Pat Maddalena at mid-period, then Sean Pollock and Jeff Ratcliffe swapped tallies five minutes later.

New York (11-6, 1-0) moved ahead for the first time on a Brendan Mundorf goal early in the second quarter, shifting from chaser to chasee as the Titans twice took a lead and promptly allowed the Swarm to tie.

Following another exchange of goals just before halftime, New York took a two-goal lead early in the third quarter, Mike McLellan 48 seconds in and Ratcliffe just before the halfway point of the period.

Goals by Andy Secore late in the third quarter and by Dan Marohl early in the fourth tied the game, then Ratcliffe and Pollock swapped goals for an 8-8 tie with just under six minutes to play.

That, however, was followed by consecutive goals by Powell and a quick tally by Maddalena; the Swarm never responded.

Powell finished as the game's top scorer, netting four goals and dishing out three assists. Secore had three goals and three assists for the Swarm.



Calgary Roughnecks at Colorado Mammoth

Kaleb Toth and Jeff Shattler had tricks as the Roughnecks drove the Mammoth to playoff extinction, 15-13.

After allowing a Josh Sanderson goal to open the game, Colorado (9-8, 0-1) scored four straight goals (Nick Carlson, Jason Wulder, Brian Langtry and Chris Gill) to open a 4-1 lead.

Calgary (8-9, 1-0) stormed back in the second quarter, with Curt Malawsky, Toth, and Shattler stringing together goals to tie the game at 4-4. a Jamie Shewchuk goal briefly restored the Mammoth's lead, but goals by Toth and Kelly Hall staked the Riggers to a 6-5 halftime advantage.

Shattler scored again to open the third quarter, but Gavin Prout soon netted a pair of goals for Colorado, tying the game at 7-7. Jordan Cornfield put the Mammoth ahead moments later, but Tracey Kelusky quickly tied the game; Gill restored Colorado's one-goal lead, only to watch Kelusky tie the game again three minutes later.

Shewchuk scored with two minutes left in the third quarter, then teammate Jim Moss netted a goal 1:32 into the fourth for an 11-9 Mammoth lead. It didn't last long. After Mike Carnegie swapped a goal with Wulder, Calgary pumped out five straight goals to put the game away.

Kelusky and Shewchuk led their teams in scoring, posting identical stat lines of two goals and five assists.



Portland LumberJax at San Jose Stealth

Dan Dawson tallied twelve points, leading the LumberJax to an 18-16 upset of the Stealth.

Dawson watsed little time in building his impressive stat line, scoring 33 seconds into the game and again just before the three-minute mark. However, San Jose (9-8, 0-1) had the lead after one quarter, 4-3.

A wild second quarter began with the Stealth netting four goals, three of them comprising a natural hat trick by Jeff Zywicki. Portland (7-10, 1-0) fired back with five straight goals later in the period, rallying to within 10-9 by halftime.

Frank Resetarits and and Peter Veltman scored early in the third quarter to boost San Jose's lead to 12-9, but back came the LumberJax, as goals from Ryan Powell, Brad MacDonald and Dawson tied the game at 12-12.

Dawson scored again to begin the fourth quarter, touching off a back-and-forth run during which neither team got ahead by more than one goal. Finally, with 2:56 left in regulation, MacDonald snapped a 16-16 tie, then Powell potted a goal in the final second.

Dawson easily led all players in scoring, netting seven goals and five assists. Powell chipped in four goals and four assists, while Peter Morgan dished out seven assists. Zywicki paced the Stealth with four goals and three assists.

The LumberJax advance to play Calgary in the Western Division final, Saturday night at the Saddledome.
