NLL Week Nine: Steenhuis leads Bandits past TitansSix goals, four assists in 12-10 win; Riggers clip Wings, 15-7R.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Nine, 6 March 2010. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.) Orlando Titans at Buffalo Bandits Steenhuis wasted no time making his presence felt, scoring the first three goals of the game. By period's end, Buffalo (3-6) was ahead 4-0, a lead it would not relinquish. Orlando (4-3) countered with two quick Casey Powell goals to begin the second quarter, but goaltender Ken Montour allowed just one goal the rest of the first half and the Bandits had an 8-3 halftime advantage. The Titans made a game of it in the third quarter, pulling to within 8-6 late in the period. Steenhuis countered for the Bandits, preventing Orlando from closing to within a single goal. More of the same in the fourth quarter, during which the Titans reduced their deficit to two goals on four occasions; three of those times, the Bandits scored to move their lead back to three. Steenhuis easily led all scorers, having a hand in as many Bandits goals as the Titans scored at all, ten (6 goals, 4 assists). Powell had a six-point night for the Titans, scoring five goals and assisting on one more. Philadelphia Wings at Calgary Roughnecks Calgary (5-3) led almost from start to finish, with Kaleb Toth putting the Riggers out to a 1-0 lead just 24 seconds into the game. By the end of the first quarter, Calgary had a 4-2 lead. The second quarter was even worse for Philadelphia (2-7), as the limping Wings allowed five more goals -- two by Scott Ranger -- and trailed 9-4 at intermission. The floggings continued well into the third quarter, Kelusky scoring once and dishing out two assists. After forty-five minutes, Calgary held a 13-5 lead; the Riggers coasted to victory from there. Kelusky led all scorers with eight points (3 goals, 5 assists), trailed closely by Josh Sanderson (1 goal, 6 assists) and Ranger (4 goals, 1 assist). Drew Westervelt (1 goal, 4 assists) and Kyle Wailes (3 goals) paced the Wings. -30- |
