Steenhuis named NLL Player of WeekKing picks up Defensive honors; Vyse, Merrill split Rookie awardR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Buffalo Bandits forward Mark Steenhuis was named today as the National Lacrosse League's Overall Player of the Week for Week Thirteen. Fellow Bandit Roger Vyse and Portland LumberJax teammates Matt King and Brodie Merrill were also honored for their play during the weekend of 24-25 March. Steenhuis, also selected as Offensive Player of the Week, scored two goals in the Bandits' 13-11 win Friday night at Minnesota, then shredded Rochester for seven goals (two of them shorthanded) and one assist in an 18-13 rout over the Knighthawks. King, the Defensive Player of the Week, entered Saturday's game against San Jose late in the first quarter, with the LumberJax down 5-0, and rallied the troops for an 11-10 victory. King allowed just five goals on 32 shots faced over the game's final 51 minutes. Vyse, who tied with Merrill for Rookie of the Week honors, totalled four goals and three assists in the Bandits' two victories. Merrill scored two goals, dished out two assists, and recovered 23 loose balls in the comeback win over San Jose. This marks the first tie for a weekly award since Gary and Paul Gait shared honors in 1999, following a weekend in which Gary tied the single-game record of ten goals and Paul, hours later, scored nine. Merrill is the most-decorated of this week's winners, honored for the fourth time. Steenhuis is a third-time honoree (twice this year), as is King (second time in three weeks), while Vyse debuts. -30- |
