File this under News Within Non-News: Former Minnesota Swarm head coach Adam Mueller will jump ship in 2007, becoming the head coach of the expansion New York franchise.

The non-news, of course, is that New York is joining the National Lacrosse League, a development which certainly was no secret for several months.

The Eastern Division addition had even been acknowledged by the league in the lead-up to tomorrow's Expansion Draft.

However, the league waited until today to formally announce the new entry, doing so at an outdoor press conference at East River Park in Manhattan.

"It is my great pleasure to present New York City's first professional lacrosse team," mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

"Showcasing lacrosse on the world's greatest stage here in New York City creates a partnership that will maintain lacrosse's position as the fastest growing sport in America."

The news is Mueller, whose possible move to the Big Apple had been whispered about but not publicized.

Mueller comes to New York after leading the Minnesota Swarm to an 8-8 record and its first playoff berth this past season. He also coached the Philadelphia Wings from 2002-2004, compiling a 23-26 record, and won an NLL championship the season before that as a Wings assistant coach.

Mueller, who is also New York's interim general manager, played eleven seasons, breaking in with Detroit in 1990 and moving on to stints in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Albany.

The as-yet-unnamed team is owned by several New York businessmen, including Gary Rosenbach, founder of the Galleon Group; William E. Ford, president of General Atlantic, LLC; Nick Leone, Senior Managing Director at The Blackstone Group; Flip Huffard, Senior Managing Director at The Blackstone Group; and Richard Ullmann, president of Four Winds Financial Group, LLC.

The unique part of New York's announcement is that it likely will have more than one home arena, with at least four of the team's home games at Madison Square Garden.

Other possible home arenas were not identified, but likely will include Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, home of the New York Saints from 1989 to 2003.

The team, as many other NLL expansion entries have done, has launched a name-the-team contest on its web site, NewYorkNLL.com and is accepting deposits on 2007 season tickets.
