Brandon Miller taken first in expansion draftStealth goalie headed to Chicago; New York opens with MaddalenaR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief The Chicago Shamrox took San Jose Stealth goaltender Brandon Miller with the first pick in this afternoon's National Lacrosse League expansion draft. Miller was the first of three goaltenders selected, with the unnamed New York team claiming Curtis Palidwor (Calgary Roughnecks) and Aaron Bold (Portland LumberJax) in the second and third rounds, respectively. As a result, all three teams which exposed two experienced goaltender lost one of them, and each had to pull back the other netminder (Matt Vinc, Andrew Leyshon, and Matt King). Before cementing their goaltending situation, though, the New Yorkers locked up one of the top offensive players available, selecting Arizona's Pat Maddalena with the second-overall pick. Maddalena was third on the Sting last season in goals (24) and points (58), and second in assists (34). Arizona quickly reclaimed goaltender Mike Miron, leading the Shamrox to select Toronto Rock defenseman Darryl Gibson with the third-overall pick. Between Palidwor and Bold, Chicago snagged young Calgary forward Callum Crawford, who tallied four goals and four assists in limited action last season. The rest of the draft followed quietly, with Chicago opting mainly for better-known players (such as Colorado's Dan Stroup and Chris Gill and Buffalo's Jon Harasym) and New York focusing on defensemen (Philadelphia's Rich Brzeski and Jeff Spano among them) and young forwards (Arizona's Mike McLellan and Toronto's Matt Taylor). Chicago, though, took the only player who did not come from an active roster, selecting Edmonton Rush defenseman Kyle Dupont with its final pick in the eleven-round draft. Dupont was a sixth-round pick in the 2005 NLL Entry Draft. Dupont and Tyler Heavenor (taken by New York with the following pick) combined to give Edmonton the dubious distinction of having the final two selections in a draft in which every existing team would lose exactly two players. Unlike last year, when Portland and Edmonton busily swung trades during and after the expansion draft, not a single trade was announced today.
