New York club to be called Titans

The National Lacrosse League's expansion franchise in New York City will be known as the Titans, team president George Daniel announced today.

The Titans will go with a predominantly blue and orange color scheme, as shown in the team logo at right.

New York Titans logo.

New York's logo features an armored orange helmet, with the top of a skyscraper replacing the plain spike atop the helmet. Inside the helmet is a blue uppercase 'T', with white trim.

The entire helmet logo is bordered (from inside out) by white, blue and orange trim.

Below the helmet is the word "Titans" in uppercase orange letters, with blue trim. Just above that is "New York" in blue uppercase letters.

The team name of "Titans" won out in a name-the-team contest which drew 7,000 entries.

"The overwhelming choice of the fans is Titans," Daniel said. "The image of New York is one of power. The name Titans captures that."

It also, perhaps coincidentally (or perhaps not), conjures memories of another New York Titans club. That was the original name of the NFL's New York Jets, and at the time the then-AFL Eastern Division team used the monkier, pro football was just starting to break out as a major sport.

"As members of one of the fastest growing leagues in all of sports, it's not surprising that the New York Titans ownership places a strong priority on branding," said Daniel Price, CEO of Adrenalin, the company which developed the logo.

"Our collective goal was to develop an organizational brand that combined the dynamic excitement of New York with the aggressive mentality of the sport of lacrosse. The resulting name and logo thus includes a warrior's steel helmet with the city's majestic skyline."

In addition to the team name, logo, and brand new web site (nytitanslacrosse.com), the Titans also officially announced that it will play four home games at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan and four games at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY, on Long Island.

The Titans will host games at the Garden on 20 January (Chicago), 17 February (Minnesota), 3 March (Toronto) and 17 March (Buffalo).

The games at Nassau Coliseum, home of the now-defunct New York Saints from 1989 to 2003, are slated for 26 January (Philadelphia), 24 February (San Jose), 24 March (Rochester), and 31 March (Edmonton).

"We're very pleased with the schedule," Daniel said. "We have the best of both worlds. We will play four games at Nassau Coliseum, right in the heart of lacrosse country on Long Island, and we will play four games at the world's most famous arena in Madison Square Garden."

No announcement was made on where possible postseason games would be played, perhaps to keep all options open until building availability is more certain.
