The Philadelphia Wings today acquired first-round draft choice Kyle Wailes from the Calgary Roughnecks for a 2007 first-round entry draft selection.

Wailes, the ninth-overall pick in September's draft, had recently informed the Roughnecks that, due to his high-paying day job in New York City, he would not be able to commute to Calgary any time soon.

"It's unfortunate we were unable to find a solution that would allow Kyle to play in Calgary, as we think he is a fantastic player," Roughnecks general manager Kurt Silcott said.

Wailes starred in transition for Brown University, scoring twelve goals and dishing out seven assists in 2006 after pumping out 30 assists the previous season.

"[Wailes] is an obvious talent and but for his work commitments in New York City, he would probably have gone far higher than ninth in the draft," Silcott said upon signing Wailes last month.

The deal puts the Wings on both ends of the holdout-for-trade scene, as University of Denver product Geoff Snider remains idle, with no end in sight.

Snider's problem is much like Wailes' -- work.

At the time of the draft, Snider had a job he didn't like and was ready to move east. Since then, he has been hired by Western Capital Partners, a real estate development in Colorado, a job he'd rather not abandon.

"I respect the Wings," Snider, the fourth-overall pick, said recently. "It doesn’t boil down to wanting to go there. It boils down to 'Would it be easier on my life?'"

"When it comes down to living and making things work you have to keep your priorities straight and I think people understand that."

Snider lists Arizona and Portland (in addition to the hometown Mammoth) as favorable trade destinations, but Wings coach Lindsay Sanderson says he's still waiting for a trade offer.

In the meantime, veteran Peter Jacobs continues to handle faceoffs in Philly and Snider waits patiently for the opportunity Wailes just received.
