The Calgary Roughnecks fired vice president and general manager Kurt Silcott on Tuesday, ending a three-year tenure in which the team made the playoffs each season.

Under Silcott, the Roughnecks compiled a regular-season record of 25-23. Calgary finished 9-7 in Silcott's first two seasons and 7-9 in 2008, but only this year's squad won a playoff game, advancing to the Western Division Final before losing to Portland.

"It has been great working with Kurt over the past three years, but we were both heading in different directions," Roughnecks owner Brad Banister said. "We all want to thank him for his time spent with the team and wish him well in the future."

Indications are that the move had more to do with the team's finances than its on-field product.

"Kurt is a smart guy and a good GM, but we lost a pile of money," Banister told the Calgary Sun, while declining to reveal the extent of the team's red ink.

"Unfortunately I can't go, so he's going to have to."

As team vice president, Silcott was in charge of the Roughgnecks' business operations.

"I don't have good reasons for why this happened," Silcott said. "I think this is a catastrophic move on their part.

"I won't say anything that will damage the Calgary Roughnecks. I just fear for their future.

"I don't think getting rid of me will solve the problems of the Calgary Roughnecks."

Prior to joining the Roughnecks, Silcott was general manager of the Buffalo Bandits for eight season, earning General Manager of the Year honors in 2003.

Until a replacement is found, Banister will fill in as the Roughnecks' general manager.

In addition, the future of head coach Troy Cordingley -- whose contract expired at the end of the season and who was hired in part because of his Buffalo ties to Silcott -- is also unclear.
