The National Lacrosse League Board of Governors today approved the sale of the Rochester Knighthawks to Arrow Express Sports of Six Nations, Ontario.

The new majority owner of the Knighthawks is Curt Styres, president of Arrow Express Sports.

The approval is contingent on Arrow Express Sports signing a new lease at the Blue Cross Arena, where the team has played since its founding in 1995.

"Arrow Express Sports continues to work diligently to negotiate a lease with the city that makes good business sense to both parties," Lewis Staats of Arrow Express Sports said.

"We are confident that with the best efforts of all involved that we will be able to resolve the lease situation to the satisfaction of both parties and both leagues," he added.

Styres, a businessman based in Ohsweken, Ontario, is believed to be the first Native to own a professional sports franchise.

"As the premier professional league in the sport of lacrosse, the National Lacrosse League is thrilled and honored to welcome Curt Styres as the new owner of the Rochester Knighthawks," NLL commissioner Jim Jennings said.

"The history of our sport is very rich in the culture and traditions of the Native North American people," Jennings added, "and it gives us great pride to have the first Native North American owner of a major pro sports franchise here in the NLL."
